Tim Morgan - Engineering

I first joined Bentley Motor Cars in July 2004 as an Industrial Placement, where I worked in Chassis Engineering for 12 months. I was given the role of Development Engineer in the Steering Team where I was responsible for Optimisation and Noise Reduction of the Continental GT steering system.

I was delighted to be given this high level of responsibility as the project involved working with group suppliers to develop prototype parts, creating test procedures, running dynamic vehicle tests at various proving grounds in the UK and Germany, analysing the results and proposing changes. I gained a huge amount of experience and personal development, in addition to technical expertise through working with the VW Research Department as I pioneered the use of their Steering Robot in Bentley steering tests. I also have many fantastic memories of travelling at high speeds in the Continental GT!

After this placement, I returned to University feeling highly focussed on where I was heading and felt much more like an Engineer than a Student. In July 2006 I returned to Bentley to complete a 2 month Summer Placement in Interior Trim Engineering which was a fantastic opportunity to experience a new area of Engineering and build up a wider network of contacts across the business. I was involved with validating the Bill of Materials for a new model and also organising and executing prototype builds of interior components for up coming model year changes. This role gave me a glimpse of many new areas as I worked cross functionally with Finance, Purchase, Logistics, Quality and Manufacturing Engineering to complete successful prototype builds.

Following this placement, I returned to the University of Bath where I completed my final year of study and gained a 1st Class Masters Degree in Innovation and Engineering Design. Following the success of my placements at Bentley I was offered a permanent position as an Engineer in Interior Engineering. I now work in the Instrument Panel and Console Team and am involved in the design and development of future Bentley models, giving me the exciting prospect of taking part in engineering a new car right through from the initial concept to a complete production model and beyond!

I feel I have benefited immensely both personally and professionally as a result of my placements at Bentley. Thanks to the training set up by the Academy Team I improved my Assertive Communication, Presentation Skills and Team Working within a professional environment and I made many useful contacts and friendships, which have proved to be of huge benefit in my future work. The placements also provided me with a valuable insight into the Engineering Industry at a point in my career where I could apply this learning to my studies and focus on what I wanted to do in the future. Therefore I would highly recommend a placement at Bentley to give you the challenges, enjoyment and experience to improve.
